It seems like AI is beginning to take shape. There’s so much hype about what it can do and how much time it can save you, but, honestly, it doesn’t do what I want it to do yet. It will be really neat if Google fully integrates Gemini into Google Assistant. As of right now, it can only scratch the surface.
I want an AI who will monitor my email box and text messages and alert me if something important comes in. I want it to be able to call a support number and wait on hold for me, then bring me on the line when they answer. I want to be able to tell my AI assistant to put things on my shopping list, organize the list based on the most efficient route through the store, and present it to me when I need it.
There are some things I already enjoy from Google Fi, but wouldn’t it be neat if everyone had it? Fi answers calls from unknown numbers and asks them what they’re calling about. It shows me what the person says and asks me if I want to take the call. Why isn’t this a thing everywhere? If it recognizes a number as SPAM, it hangs up and blocks the number. Why can’t they extend this to my Gmail account?
I’m excited for Google to integrate Gemini into Assistant, but there are still too many things it can’t do for me. I can’t ask it to play something on Spotify while I’m driving. I can’t ask it to turn lights on and off. (This is useful when arriving home in the dark and wanting the porch light to come on.) It can’t add things to my calendar or do anything with my emails besides summarize them.
Right now, AI is just a cool toy to play with, but it doesn’t do anything useful to me, personally. I don’t need it to create documents for me. I don’t need it to generate pictures for me. How cool would it be to wake up one morning and have my AI tell me a band I like set a tour date in my area and ask me if I want to buy tickets? How about monitoring the news for severe weather and alert me if I need to take shelter quickly?
I want practical uses for AI that make my everyday life easier and more organized.
