TV: AJ and the Queen

This has got to be one of the cutest series I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a pity they only did one season of it because it had such potential. I’ve never really seen RuPaul in anything to know whether or not he could act. All I can so is he can do it.

I’ve never really been exposed to drag and have always had a hard time understanding the draw of it. I’ve tried to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race a few times and felt like there was just too much cliche and silliness to follow.

This small series introduced me to the possibilities of drag and that it can be a really fun performance art. It’s part glamor, part comedy show, and part music, but all sass. I digress.

Ruby Red finds AJ, a ten-year-old girl, abandoned by her drug addict mother on the street. She desperately wants to go find her pop pop in Texas. Ruby wants to open a drag club, but her boyfriend abandoned her and took all the money. Ruby has to go on a national tour and enter the Miss Drag competition to try to win enough money to make her dream come true.

AJ is a very cute little girl who steals the show with her sass and charm. She’s everything you’d expect in a runaway child. Ruby keeps her safe on their adventure and they grow into a small family. I’m not going to tell you how the series ends, but I’ll reiterate that it left me wanting the next part of the story.
